Evan Connell’s novels Mr. Bridge and Mrs. Bridge, written a decade apart, are woven together into evocative scenes from a marriage as the 1930s and 1940s progress for the titular Kansas City couple with both jarring change and lack thereof. In a casting coup, real-life married couple Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward portray the Bridges; she and Jhabvala won New York Film Critics Circle awards for their work here, with Woodward also scoring an Oscar nomination.
