Writer/director Mazursky mined his own past for this warm comedy/drama set in the Village circa 1953, when it was a bohemian mecca for self-invention. Aspiring actor Lenny Baker arrives from Brooklyn and meets potential mate Ellen Greene—and, at a fateful movie casting call run by Mazursky himself, aggressive auditioning actor Goldblum; the latter, in his first breakout role, succeeds where his character does not.
