Impresario of the engaged documentary Alex Gibney crosses the pond and wades into the murky waters of Northern Ireland’s bitter and lethally prolonged Troubles. His subject is the 1994 pub slaughter in the rural town of Loughinisland, committed by renegade Ulster Volunteer Force gunmen—and the inexplicable failure of the subsequent investigation to bring the perpetrators to justice. As Gibney gradually uncovers the entanglement of police and Protestant paramilitary gangsters, this event comes to encapsulate the shady dealings of the entire province’s 25-year-long Dirty War. A hard hitting exposé with a quietly chilling denouement.
