In a wintry 1925, two rural families of sharply diverging beliefs within the Christian faith run the risk of a Romeo-and-Juliet scenario when the Borgen family’s son seeks to marry the Petersen family’s daughter. The stunning cinematography is by Henning Bendtsen. The winner of the top prize at the Venice Film Festival, Dreyer’s masterwork (and penultimate film) elevates Kaj Munk’s play into one of the screen’s transcendent dramatizations of religious conviction.
