Bogdanovich perfectly realized the jostling humor and wistful poignancy in Oscar-nominated Alvin Sargent’s adaptation of Joe David Brown’s novel Addie Pray. Across the Depression-era American Midwest (beautifully rendered by cinematographer László Kovács) con man Ryan O’Neal takes orphan Tatum O’Neal (who won an Oscar) under his wing, with the kid ably partnering him in scams—at least until he courts Madeline Kahn (who was also Oscar-nominated).
