Updating and adapting Dostoyevsky’s “The Double” to the late-’60s present of student protests, Bertolucci embraces the darkly funny surrealism of the tale and the times while availing himself of Ennio Morricone’s musical accompaniment. Pierre Clémenti plays Giaccobe, whose psychic malaise takes twisted turns when he encounters his own doppelgänger, also played by Clémenti, amidst potential romantic entanglements with Stefania Sandrelli and Tina Aumont.
