Hitting the zeitgeist with mother-lode results, Grace Metalious’ novel baring the family secrets and false fronts of a seemingly ordinary New England town pre-WWII was swiftly shepherded to the screen by power producer Jerry Wald as scandalous drama to which audiences could relate. Big box office in turn yielded nine Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and Director as well as for actors Lana Turner, Arthur Kennedy, Russ Tamblyn, Hope Lange, and Diane Varsi.
