Purple Noon

1960, 115m, 35mm, France/Italy

Alain Delon became an overnight star headlining the first feature adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s novel The Talented Mr. Ripley; after seeing the film, she enthusiastically endorsed his take on aspirational sociopath Tom Ripley. Delon’s seductive Ripley reunites with childhood acquaintance Maurice Ronet in order to pocket a fee for bringing the latter back to the U.S., but his taste for the finer things quickly intensifies. Clément makes a Hitchcockian cameo; the score is by Nino Rota. In French with English subtitles.
