In Trueba’s Franco-era sequel to his 1998 The Girl of Your Dreams, film star Macarena (Penélope Cruz) returns to Spain to film an American epic about Queen Isabella I of Castile for a Hollywood mogul (Arturo Ripstein). But the production is halted soon after the director is arrested by the fascist government, and Macarena must convince the cast and crew (including Cary Elwes and Mandy Patinkin) to join her on a rescue mission. With rich art direction and filled with period references, this is a warmly comic ode to the art of filmmaking and a bygone studio system.
