In the first of his two classics for Visconti, Delon stars as the title sibling, brought with three brothers by matriarch Katina Paxinou to Milan where the fifth, eldest Spiros Focas, has made a better life for himself. Epic emotional and physical violence ensues as the brothers both shore up and weigh down each other through the years. The cast’s female contingent also includes Claudia Cardinale, Suzy Delair, and Annie Girardot.
