Adapting Paul Theroux’s novel (with the author also a screenwriter), Bogdanovich went to Singapore to make a rueful yet wryly funny drama looking back at a more recent past. It’s the early 1970s, and Ben Gazzara genially oversees hookers while nursing dreams, including a return home to the U.S.; a moral flashpoint looms through dealings with gangster Bogdanovich, client Denholm Elliott, and senator George Lazenby.
