Written and directed by NYU Tisch grad Emma Seligman, Shiva Baby is a sharp-witted female-driven comedy that cuts through what it means to be a young woman. Insecure and directionless twenty-something Danielle (Rachel Sennott) finds herself in the hilariously awkward situation of running into her sugar daddy (Danny Deferrari) at a shiva (Jewish mourning period for the bereaved) with his “shiksa princess” wife (Dianna Agron) and their screaming baby. To complicate matters further, Danielle’s own parents (Fred Melamed and Polly Draper) and her successful, law school-bound ex-girlfriend (Molly Gordon) are also in attendance. Seligman’s feature debut explores sexuality, self-worth, and independence, succeeding through a radically bold tone and outlandish circumstances. A Utopia release
