Drawing on his and director Parker’s own lives, screenwriter Bo Goldman (Melvin and Howard, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest) dramatizes the end of Albert Finney and Diane Keaton’s marriage — and the emotional impact on daughters Dana Hill, Viveka Davis, Tracey Gold, and Tina Yothers. Parker eschews a score in favor of affecting strains of songs and, per Kael, reversing her dim view of Parker’s work to date, “devote[s] his full attention to the cast” as the film “makes clear that the kids aren’t just add-ons.”
