In this tale of destructive sibling rivalry from beyond the grave, cool and efficient executive assistant Jutta Lampe (in her first von Trotta film) and her dreamy and disorganized graduate student younger sister Gudrun Gabriel share an apartment in Hamburg—until the latter commits suicide. Throwing herself into her work Lampe becomes mentor to colleague Jessica Früh, who eventually takes the place of the dead sister—literally and emotionally.
