Novelist Kurt Vonnegut’s acclaimed anti-war fantasia got major-studio treatment despite the quicksilver material. The score is by legendary pianist Glenn Gould (in a very rare film foray, performing Bach pieces as was his wont), while celebrated casting director Marion Dougherty booked everyone from Holly Near to John Wood. In his film debut, Michael Sacks plays Vonnegut’s protagonist Billy Pilgrim; he time-jumps among childhood, WWII, the 1960s, and outer space — the latter with Valerie Perrine, in her film debut, as sex star Montana Wildhack.
