Teresa Carpenter’s Pulitzer Prize-winning Village Voice article “Death of a Playmate” was adapted by Fosse for what would be his final movie, with the filmmaker propulsively exploring in sorrowful detail how the life of Dorothy Stratten (1980 Playboy Playmate of the Year) was clouded and then ended by manager/husband Paul Snider. Transcending showbiz trappings, Fosse elicited all-too-human portrayals from Mariel Hemingway and Eric Roberts in the leads.
