Fassbinder’s off-kilter black-and-white homage to Hollywood gangsters and loners stars Karl Scheydt as a Vietnam veteran who performs hit jobs in Munich. Elga Sorbas’ character, sent in as bait by the police, is named Rosa von Praunheim, name-checking the LGBTQ filmmaker and contemporary of Fassbinder and von Trotta; the latter is cast here as a chambermaid whose workday goes from bad to worse.
