With its elaborate production design and unforgettable finale, this adaptation of Nathanael West’s novel is a searing vision of desperation on the fringes of 1930s Hollywood. Set designer William Atherton takes in the corruption surrounding him, a pitiful Donald Sutherland dotes on heartless would-be film extra Karen Black, plus there’s Jackie Earle Haley as a child actor from hell.
