Bates reunited with Julie Christie and the English countryside, gorgeously shot here by Gerry Fisher, advancing to the summer of 1900. Young teen Dominic Guard faces a life-lessons learning curve when engaged upper-class Christie enlists him to hand deliver communiqués to and from charismatic farmer Bates in furtherance of their adults’ love affair. Losey’s film took the Palme d’Or at Cannes, and later scored an Oscar nod for Margaret Leighton as Christie’s mother.
