The Golden Bowl

2000, 130m, 35mm, U.S./France/UK

In this turn-of-the-century tale adapted by Ruth Prawer Jhabvala for Merchant Ivory from James’ reported favorite among his works, Jeremy Northam is titled but near-penniless, so he and equally broke soul mate Uma Thurman try to keep a respectable distance as he marries her heiress friend Kate Beckinsale, after which she marries Beckinsale’s billionaire father Nick Nolte. The score is by Merchant Ivory mainstay Richard Robbins (The Remains of the Day et al.).
