Tapping into ’70s strains of eco-horror and zombie mayhem, Rollin and co-scripters Jean-Pierre Bouyxou (who appears onscreen, in mutated form) and Christian Meunier (also second assistant director) hit audiences where they lived by making wine into an agent of terror: pesticides are contaminating vineyards, with subsequent harvest-quaffing infecting villagers with the (barely) human equivalent of bovine spongiform encephalopathy—that’s mad cow disease to you. Can brave Marie-Georges Pascal turn the tide?
