In a powerhouse performance James Earl Jones plays a heavyweight boxer based on real-life figure Jack Johnson, whose winning streak in the early 1910s is all but unbreakable, stirring up a racist media frenzy and leading to calls for a white challenger. But Johnson’s pursuit of a white woman (Jane Alexander) may be what ultimately brings him down. Both Jones and Alexander reprised their roles from the original Broadway play and received Oscar nominations.
