Harold Pinter’s scabrous Tony Award-winning drama is one of the AFT’s highlights. Director Peter Hall had collaborated on prior productions of the play with three cast members, including Pinter’s wife Vivien Merchant, whose performance earned her a BAFTA nomination; she plays the wife belatedly meeting her husband Michael Jayston’s menacing all-male family (including Ian Holm, Cyril Cusack) in their bleak North London habitat.
