Although notorious for its casting of Ronald Reagan as a slippery crime boss and its hard edged violence that necessitated a theatrical release over a telefilm broadcast, Siegel’s movie (freely adapted from an Ernest Hemingway story) is most notable for Marvin’s BAFTA Award-winning performance, with his hit man character’s martini-dry wit and simmering cool guiding the viewer through the flashback-driven mystery of his contract kill target John Cassavetes and missing loot.
