For another of his bruising meditations on showbiz’s emotionally corrosive effects on personal relationships, Aldrich enlisted his frequent screenwriter Lukas Heller to adapt Frank Marcus’ play. Encoring in her Tony Award-winning role, Beryl Reid scalds as the caustic and closeted soap-opera actress facing a career setback and the suspected infidelity of younger partner Susannah York. Aldrich battled UK censors and the MPAA, which wouldn’t budge on its newly minted X rating until years later.
