The first African-American feature to be financed by a major Hollywood studio (Warner Bros.): Gordon Parks, who went on to direct Shaft, produced, directed, scored, and adapted his own autobiographical novel for this coming-of-age story of two boys living in small town Kansas in the 1920s. Newt and Marcus’ contrasting responses to the era’s racial prejudices takes a turn when Newt witnesses Marcus’ father commit murder.
