Effecting one of his purest meldings of film and theatre, Pacino had first starred off-Broadway with Michael Hadge and Joseph Maher in Heathcote Williams’ confrontational one-act play, and later engaged the author for a screen adaptation that Pacino bankrolled and co-produced. Two disenchanted Brits, played by Pacino and Paul Guilfoyle, gravitate to outright sociopathy as they toy with each other and societal norms, and fatefully ensnare minor-league actor Maher.
