Pacino returned to interpreting Shakespeare onscreen for this elegant on-location version of this thorniest play, adapted and directed by Radford, digging deep into one of the Bard’s most aggrieved characters. In late 16th-century Venice, moneylender Pacino withstands ingrained anti-Semitism, but he will have his day in court to collect what he is owed from merchant Jeremy Irons, even as lovers Joseph Fiennes and Lynn Collins try to find a loophole in the case.
