In 1993, after being caught in flagrante delicto with the prom queen, Cameron (Chloë Grace Moretz) is sent to an evangelical gay conversion therapy camp, where the head doctor (Jennifer Ehle) and her reverend brother (John Gallagher, Jr.) try to “cure” their young and troubled residents. Director Akhavan (Appropriate Behavior) delivers an acerbic yet unfailingly tender portrait of identity under fire—examining how and why emotional abuse is institutionalized, and the many small triumphs of surviving it.
