Directed at full gallop, Tavernier’s lively swashbuckler, at once caustic and romantic, is set in 1562, during France’s religious Civil War during which Catholics and Protestants butchered one another. The princess of Montpensier (Mélanie Thierry) is unwillingly married off into nobility, but the complications of war oblige her to consider to the desires of several other men (Lambert Wilson, Gaspard Ulliel, Raphaël Peronnaz).
