Academy Award-nominated sound and film editing place the audience at the eye of a hurricane as Bette Midler powerfully performs the title role of a top rock singer (named Mary Rose Foster, but certainly inspired by Janis Joplin) burning the candle at both ends during a fateful tour. Frederic Forrest is her beau; Harry Dean Stanton is a country singer who scorns her; and Bates is the manager hellbent on keeping his meal ticket, no matter the toll it takes on her. Both Midler and Forrest were Oscar-nominated for their performances.
