Truffaut nods to his old friend and idol Hitchcock for this simmering study of obsessions and secrets, as exes Fanny Ardant and Gérard Depardieu are seemingly inadvertently reunited when she and her husband move into the house adjacent to his and his wife’s home. Véronique Silver (as the neighborhood doyenne) and Ardant received César Award nominations; by then Ardant and Truffaut were themselves in love and remained so until his untimely passing in 1984.
