In his penultimate teaming with Boulting and the latter’s brother, John (here producing), Sellers sparkles opposite the effervescent Goldie Hawn; she as a free-spirited American abroad and he as the U.K. TV celebrity gourmand who initially courts her as his latest casual fling. The stars’ fizzy chemistry keeps things bubbly, yet Terence Frisby’s adaptation of his popular play also affords Sellers the chance to play it closer to the bone—with highly personal rueful poignancy.
