The first installment in Krzysztof Kieślowski’s critically-lauded “Colours Trilogy,” Blue explores the theme of Liberté by way of a young woman (Juliette Binoche) whose husband and daughter are killed in a car accident. Lensed in sapphire shades throughout (alluding to the film’s title), Julie proceeds to attempt to detach herself from the tragedy and her past. Binoche won both the Volpi Cup for Best Actress from the Venice Film Festival and a César Award for her performance.
