Following his Oscar-nominated Last Year at Marienbad script, novelist Robbe-Grillet added directing to his portfolio. Members of a movie unit—including Robbe-Grillet and his real-life wife Catherine—brainstorm a crime-story scenario while riding the rails from Paris to Antwerp. Bondage, drug smuggling, and picaresque intrigue ensue as Jean-Louis Trintignant and Marie-France Pisier play out the resulting racy tale for a full-on film-within-the-film.
