Talking Heads lead singer Byrne conceived with actor Stephen Tobolowsky a music-driven foray into filmmaking, co-scripted with playwright Beth Henley (Crimes of the Heart). Although she felt it was no Nashville, Kael credited Byrne’s collaborations with cinematographer Ed Lachman (Carol) and cast (including John Goodman, Spalding Gray, Swoosie Kurtz, and Staple Singers patriarch “Pops” Staples) in making for an engaging visit with the denizens of Virgil, Texas.
