The 1990s surge in James novels being made into movies saw two more female filmmakers, Holland and screenwriter Carol Doyle, here go directly to the source material for their stellar actors: Jennifer Jason Leigh is the spinster, Albert Finney her smothering father, Ben Chaplin the suitor, and Maggie Smith the well-meaning aunt. The 19th-century-Manhattan production design is by Allan Starski (Oscar winner for Schindler’s List).
