The first of David Lynch’s explorations of American Darkness—with combustible lovers Nicolas Cage and Laura Dern fleeing the wrath of mother (Oscar-nominated Diane Ladd) — won the Palme d’Or at Cannes; it was also the first of his collaborations with Stanton, who plays Mom’s private investigator/lover. Upon Stanton’s passing September 15th, Lynch wrote, “Loads of love to you wherever you are now!!!”
