Pink Floyd specifically wrote “The Violent Sequence” for Antonioni’s widescreen study of alienated Young Americans on their way from Los Angeles to Death Valley, but the filmmaker rejected the song as “too sad.” He instead used a rerecording of B-side “Careful with That Axe, Eugene” for the film’s truly explosive conclusion, one of cinema’s all-time great finales.
