Dark Continent: The Films of Agnieszka Holland

Across more than three decades of filmmaking, Academy Award-nominee Agnieszka Holland has consistently portrayed Europe as a continent defined by recurring moral and political crises rather than a stable land of progress. Whether through the horrors of Nazism and antisemitism during WWII in Europa Europa (1990); the man-made famine in Stalin’s Soviet Union seen in Mr Jones (2019); or the current humanitarian catastrophe unfolding on the Poland–Belarus border as depicted in Green Border (2023); these films suggest that Europe’s defining crises are not isolated events, but perhaps interconnected snapshots of political extremism and the failure to protect human dignity. So please join us as we celebrate the incredible work of Agnieszka Holland ahead of the release of her latest feature, Franz (a Cohen Media Group film).
