An enchanting enigma whose mysterious beauty has dazzled audiences from the moment she stepped on screen as a lovelorn teenager in the Palme d’Or-winning The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, Catherine Deneuve is one of the key figures of French cinema. That breakthrough film then led Deneuve to collaborations with some of the most important European auteurs of the 20th century. Highlights that include her role as an affluent housewife who finds herself performing daytime sex work in Luis Buñuel’s surrealist erotic masterpiece, Belle de Jour. Her César-award-winning performance as the member of a theater troupe living under Nazi occupation in François Truffaut’s The Last Metro. And Jacques Demy’s The Young Girls of Rochefort, another candy-colored musical from the master of the genre. The Quad Cinema is proud to present all of these films and others in a career retrospective ahead of the release of Deneuve’s latest critically-acclaimed performance in Léa Domenach’s The President’s Wife (a Cohen Media Group film).
