King Henry VIII (Richard Burton), disappointed by the failure of Catherine of Aragon (Irene Papas) to give birth to a male heir, proceeds to marry Anne Boleyn (Bujold). When their first offspring proves to be a girl, things don’t bode well for Anne’s remaining queen beyond a thousand days. Bujold was nominated for a Best Actress Academy Award for a performance which Vincent Canby described as “a constantly delightful surprise.”
