Screenwriter Jay Presson Allen synthesized Christopher Isherwood’s Berlin Stories and its stage adaptations. Making the movie his own, Fosse pushed boundaries in depicting the pansexual and musical exploits of nightclub performer Liza Minnelli and MC Joel Grey in 1930s Germany. The box-office hit won eight Oscars including Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Cinematography (Geoffrey Unsworth), and Best Director.
