Not entirely forsaking his neo-realist style, Rossellini directed then-wife Ingrid Bergman in his filmed adaptation of a performance of a French opera (libretto, Paul Claudel; music, Arthur Honegger), shot by cinematographer Gábor Pogány (Two Women). Returning to portray Joan after having played her previously, the great Bergman rivets the attention of the opera house audience, the camera, and the other performers even when lashed to the stake.
