Barely avoiding an X rating, Pakula’s non-sensationalized character study (its tautness enhanced by Gordon Willis’s cinematography and Michael Small’s score) still advanced the cinematic discourse on female sexuality and adult subject matter. Titular PA detective Donald Sutherland tracks friend Robert Milli’s killer to N.Y.C., where potentially implicated call girl Jane Fonda (winning her first Best Actress Oscar) takes stock of her life and The Life. Brothers Andy and Dave Lewis’ screenplay was Oscar-nominated.
