Titular private detective Donald Sutherland tracks friend Robert Milli’s killer to NYC, where potentially implicated call girl Jane Fonda (winning a Best Actress Oscar) takes stock of her life. Recut to avoid an X rating, Pakula’s character study still advanced the cinematic discourse on female sexuality and adult subject matter. The film’s tautness is further enhanced by Gordon Willis’ cinematography and Michael Small’s score, while brothers Andy and Dave Lewis’ screenplay was Oscar-nominated.
