Garrel gives the viewer no quarter in his four-part autobiographical exploration of a couple, played by Wiazemsky and Henri de Maublanc (of Bresson’s The Devil, Probably), whose parenting efforts for her little son Xuan Lindenmeyer from another relationship can’t stanch their own toxic malaise and self-destructiveness. Although more narrative in form than Garrel’s prior work, the film challenges with its distressed black-and-white aesthetic and sonic dissonance.
