Oscar-nominated cinematography (Charles Lang Jr.) and costume design (Sheila O’Brien) enhance the black-and-white noir suspense in the streets of San Francisco as top playwright Joan Crawford (also Oscar-nominated) is wooed by hungry actor Jack Palance (his first Oscar nomination) after she has had him canned; their subsequent marriage can’t end well, at least if Gloria Grahame has anything to say about it.
