Perhaps Huston’s most emotionally resonant film, an elegiac anti-western about a group of emotionally adrift people trying—and largely failing—to find connection in the modern American West. Written by Arthur Miller for his wife, Marilyn Monroe, at a time when their marriage was collapsing. The Misfits marked the last completed screen performances for both Monroe and Clark Gable. Another tragic Hollywood star, Montgomery Clift, also co-stars which adds to the film’s haunting metatextuality about damaged individuals and a dying way of life.
