Three decades after Carl Dreyer’s influential film, Bresson too looked to the historical transcripts to depict the end of Joan’s life. But he remained true to his own aesthetic and took a knee to be with Joan (played by Florence Carrez, better known as Florence Delay) in jail, in court, and at her execution. Acclaimed at the Cannes Film Festival, this film would be Bresson’s final collaboration with cinematographer Léonce-Henri Burel, following Diary of a Country Priest et al.
