Multi-hyphenate Tom Noonan’s follow-up to Sundance prize winner What Happened Was… is every bit as intimate and provocative as his debut, with career-high performances from its ensemble cast. In their snow-capped Catskills home, two married psychotherapists (Noonan and Julie Hagerty) endure a crisis of intimacy—and then a patient and his wife (Wallace Shawn and Karen Young) arrive uninvited and can’t leave. Adapted from his play Wifey, Noonan’s masterfully calibrated chamber piece defines married life as a foundation of mutual loathing, dysfunction, perverse equivocation, and compassion.

A film by Tom Noonan

A finely concentrated, subtle, perturbing, strangely humane, and nearly perfect American comedy.”

Film Comment

[Noonan’s] film seems like a last stand against an all-encroaching darkness.”
